I’m with you—the cardinal is my fave, and I love to hear them sing. They do like to be up high, too! I’m happy we have so many here in Michigan.

Yesss! So lucky they've been plentiful almost everywhere I've lived. Magical bird.

I recently was amused to read that Ted Floyd said his favourite bird was the planet Mercury:

"I am positive that my spark bird was not yours. Now as you already know, my favorite bird is the planet Mercury. And my spark bird was—wait for it—Didelphis virginiana, the Opossum."

But then he later said it was Bushtit, so who can say...

I appreciate your paean to cardinals, but my favorite bird is the crow. They might not be as colorful, but they also hang out all year and they are as smart as a seven-year-old kid, which (fan of intelligence that I am) is a big draw. Also, they have enviably long memories! So crows it is for me!

Cardinals provide comforting memories of my Nebraska grandmother, whose birdfeeder outside the dining room window attracted many cardinals during our visits. I learned to love cardinals more in Indiana - so many, and I finally could identify them by sound, which was also comforting. Guess what bird we don't have in Colorado? And I miss them.

I think a better "what's your favorite" question is this: "What is preoccupying you (in your given hobby) right now?" -- if I can remember to ask it that way in the future.
